Abir Al-Sahlani is a Swedish politician of Iraqi origin. She was born on November 28, 1976, in Baghdad and migrated to Sweden with her parents in 1985. She is a member of the Liberal Party of Sweden and a former member of the European Parliament, representing the country from 2019 to 2020.
Before her career in politics, Al-Sahlani worked as an entrepreneur and journalist. She also served as a member of the Gothenburg Chamber of Commerce and as the head of the Iraqi-Swedish Business Council. She has been a vocal advocate for women's rights, interfaith dialogue, and entrepreneurship.
During her time in the European Parliament, Al-Sahlani focused on issues related to international trade, digital technology, and human rights. She advocated for stronger privacy protections, increased transparency in social media platforms, and better working conditions for gig workers.
Al-Sahlani is also active in various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and has received numerous awards for her work, including the Raoul Wallenberg Prize for her commitment to human dignity and the values of democracy.
